New Suzuki Swift officially unveiled, launch in India by 2018

After the introduction of the Indian carmaker's compact sedan, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, the company will soon launch the new Swift in India. Expected to reach the country by next year, Suzuki has officially revealed the Swift Hybrid in Japan with a petrol engine ? electric motor powertrain. The new Suzuki Swift is available in the Hybrid GS and Hybrid GL versions in Japan. For India, however, the Maruti Suzuki Swift would have a number of changes and the hatchback is expected to be showcased at the upcoming 2018 Auto Expo and launched later. Unlike the Suzuki Swift which is powered by a hybrid powertrain, the Indian model of the hatchback is expected to carry forward the existing 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and the 1.3-litre DDIS diesel engine options. The diesel unit should also come with Suzuki's mild-hybrid technology, SHVS. Claimed fuel efficiency for the Suzuki Swift Hybrid models is 32 kmpl, however, it is highly unlikely that a complete hybrid engine would be introduced in India. That said, the new Maruti Suzuki Swift will be based on the company's Hearttect platform which would make the premium hatchback considerably lighter compared to the existing model. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is expected to generate 83 hp of power and 115 Nm of torque. The 1.3-litre diesel engine would produce 74 hp of power and 190 Nm of torque. While both units would be available with a 5-speed manual transmission, the petrol engine may also be offered with an automatic gearbox.
In addition to the 1.3-litre diesel and the 1.2-litre petrol units, the 1.0-litre Boosterjet petrol engine which is offered in the Baleno RS may also make way into the new Swift. This engine is mated to a 5-speed transmission produces 100 hp of power and 150 Nm of torque. There will be a number of changes on the inside, the most prominent being a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system which supports navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The Japanese model gets Mirrorlink as well which may also be carried forward in the Indian-spec model. Other changes include a flat-bottom steering wheel, automatic climate control as well as a new layout of the dashboard. The exterior would have a similar front-end design when compared to the Dzire but the rear door handles have now been integrated into the C-pillars. Projector headlamps with Daytime Running Lamps and LED tail lamps will be offered, however, considering Maruti Suzuki's aggressive pricing strategy, these would be available on the higher variants or likely to be a part of the top-end trim.
With the launch of the new Maruti Suzuki Swift which is slated for next year may be worth the wait as it would be a completely new car instead of a reworked one. The engine and transmission options are most likely to be the same as the Baleno, however, a number of additional features would surely make it compete with other premium hatchbacks sold in India. Safety features on the internationally unveiled Swift include a DSBS (Dual Sensor Brake Support), lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, weaving alert, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), ISOFIX, and dual front airbags. These safety features have made the Suzuki Swift score four stars in the Euro NCAP, however, the India-bound model will have lesser features. These are expected to include dual front airbags, ABS and EBD as a standard fitment.
